SUMMARY:Black Women Superintendents Leading with Excellence
DESCRIPTION:Join The Education Trust and the School Superintendents Association (AASA) for Black Women Superintendents Leading With Excellence \n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\nDr. Latonya M. Goffney\, Superintendent\, Aldine Independent School District (TX)\n\n\n\nDr. Sonja Brookins Santelises\, CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools (MD)\n\n\n\nDr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt\, Interim Superintendent of Alexandria City Public Schools (VA)\n\n\n\nDr. Kyla Johnson-Trammell\, Superintendent of Oakland Unified School District (CA)\n\n\n\n\nModerator: Arthur Jones II\, ABC News Producer/Reporter \n\n\n\nDescription: \n\n\n\nBlack women make up only 1.4% of people leading school districts nationwide. However\, in today’s environment\, where classrooms have become sites of cultural and political conflict\, Black women leaders are best positioned for the job. Black women know firsthand what it takes to thrive amid racism and sexism — overcoming systemic barriers and challenges that many of their peers do not endure. This lived experience fuels them daily as they work to meet their student’s academic and social-emotional needs and ensure that\, despite the challenges of the pandemic\, all students leave the K-12 school system with precisely what they need to succeed. \n\n\n\nIn this candid conversation\, we’ll explore how to support students’ mental health\, the pressures of leadership\, recent book bans\, and more. These leaders will also discuss what must be done to diversify the school leadership pipeline and\, notably\, how to support Black women school leaders once they take the helm.

SUMMARY:7th Annual Let's Talk Racism Conference: 2023
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the 7th Annual Let’s Talk Racism Conference! Our theme this year is What’s at Stake?: Understanding the Attacks on Truth-Telling in Education. The keynote address will occur Friday\, March 17th at 6:30pm and conference sessions will take place Saturday\, March 18th from 9:00am – 4:00pm \, at North Carolina Central University. We plan to be back in-person this year! \nThe purpose of this event is to give K-12 educators and pre-service teachers an opportunity to engage in sessions centered on the impact of systemic racism and ways of dismantling it in our schools. While educators are the target audience\, we welcome all community members to participate. \nWe are thrilled to announce that Dr. Gholnecsar (Gholdy) Muhammad is an Associate Professor of Literacy\, Language\, and Culture at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has previously served as a classroom teacher\, literacy specialist\, school district administrator\, curriculum director\, and school board president. She studies Black historical excellence in education\, intending to reframe curriculum and instruction today. \nThis event is co-sponsored by North Carolina Central University’s School of Education\, we are (working to extend anti-racist education\, Inc)\, and Ben & Jerry’s of Chapel Hill. \nTo register visit www.LetsTalkRacism.com. SUMMARY:Center for Urban Education Summer Educator Forum
DESCRIPTION:“We are in a revolutionary situation\, no matter how unpopular that word has become in this country\,” writes James Baldwin in his 1963 touchstone speech\, “A Talk to Teachers.” He continues\, “The society in which we live is desperately menaced… from within. To any citizen of this country who figures himself as responsible—and particularly those of you who deal with the minds and hearts of young people—must be prepared to ‘go for broke’… you must understand that in the attempt to correct so many generations of bad faith and cruelty\, when it is operating not only in the classroom but in society\, you will meet the most fantastic\, the most brutal\, and the most determined resistance. There is no point in pretending that this won’t happen.” \nBaldwin’s words challenge us to critical intervention in our current moment. How do our daily conversations about “crises” in schools and schooling (e.g.\, teacher shortage\, attacks on critical race theory\, the digital divide) work to distract us from a larger focus on what Baldwin described as the “generations of bad faith and cruelty” that distinguish the entire system? \nWhat would it mean to understand the everyday practices of schools and schooling as in and of crisis? How is a “return to normal” still a return to a state of crisis? How might our work shift if we acknowledge that we are not heading toward a crisis\, but we have already been existing in one? How might we develop and use our imaginative and creative capacities\, not to try to legitimize\, tweak\, reform\, or repackage current structures\, but instead to reimagine education as a practice of freedom? \nIn this year’s free virtual CUESEF\, our theme invites our panelists to think with us beyond current “crises”—about teacher shortages\, anti-critical race theory policies\, and COVID impacts—and into the long-standing struggle for a liberating education\, locally and globally. Sessions map possibilities for study and change through examinations of teacher education locally and globally\, school leadership\, policy contexts\, homeschooling\, school-prison nexus\, food and environmental justice\, and more. We hope you will join us. \nRead James Baldwin’s “A Talk to Teachers”: A Talk to Teachers – Zinn Education Project (zinnedproject.org). \nThe Art of CUESEF 2022 \nObsidian (2021) by Morgan Overton \n“Obsidian is a black linocut print of a Black woman\,” says Overton. “It is aesthetically simple\, yet her features are proud and prominent.” \nOverton is a visual artist\, Pittsburgh native\, and alumna of the University of Pittsburgh (A&S ’16\, SOCWRK ’20). Her work aims to amplify the history\, humanity\, and future of Black culture. She works in all mediums to vibrantly reclaim narratives that history has attempted to command. Overton’s work is grounded in the Nina Simone quote\, “It’s an artist’s duty to reflect the times.” She believes that art is a powerful platform to disrupt the status quo and honor the resilience of her People. Her work has been featured across Greater Pittsburgh — notably at the Carnegie Museum of Art\, August Wilson Center\, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre\, University of Pittsburgh\, and Carnegie Mellon University — in addition to various social justice exhibits across the United States and St. Paul de Vence\, France. SUMMARY:Meeting the Moment: Strategic Recommendations for Literacy & Equity in North Carolina
DESCRIPTION:In the last decade\, North Carolina has made significant efforts to support student literacy growth. Despite these efforts\, student reading scores continue to demand our collective attention and innovation. The “Meeting the Moment: Strategic Recommendations for Literacy & Equity in North Carolina” policy brief extends the work of the 2022 NC PreK-12 Literacy & Equity Summit. It draws from a statewide educator questionnaire and focus group data to put forward six recommendations to strengthen the Literacy Learning Ecosystem across North Carolina. \nIn this webinar\, the authors will share highlights from the policy brief followed by a response to the strategic recommendations by discussant Dr. Deanna Townsend-Smith\, senior director of the Dudley Flood Center for Educational Equity and Opportunity at the Public School Forum of North Carolina. The authors and Dr. Townsend-Smith will then invite questions from audience members who teach\, advocate for and champion lifelong\, competent readers in North Carolina.

SUMMARY:Teaching in Times of COVID: Supporting Teachers to Work with Immigrant Children and Families Toward Responsive Teaching and Advocacy\, featuring Ana Christina da Silva
DESCRIPTION:Discussions about improving learning opportunities and educational equity for young children have been at the top of educational agendas in the U.S. These discussions have been intensified in the last couple of years due to restrictions in learning environments imposed by COVID-19. However\, often missing from such conversations are the aggravated sociopolitical challenges facing immigrant children and families-a population that has been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. Further missing are discussions about how best to prepare and support teachers to be responsive to the deep educational inequities and challenges laid bare by COVID-19 with respect to immigrant and refugee children. In this presentation\, Ana Christina da Silva will outline ways by which teachers\, families\, community organizers\, and university faculty and students\, can work together to expand capacity to create and enact 1) new contexts for advocacy action\, 2) new forms of school\, family\, and community connections\, and 3) new circulations of languages and literacies across households\, classrooms\, and communities. \nda Silva is a professor of the practice of education at the Peabody College of Vanderbilt University who specializes in language\, literacy\, and cultural studies. Her research centers on the teaching and learning of linguistically/culturally/racially diverse students; on understanding family and community resources in diverse urban in- and out-of-school contexts; and on partnerships between family-community-school-university that support and emphasize educational opportunity and equity. \nShe is the author of the edited volume “Re-Designing Teacher Preparation for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Young Students: An Ecological Approach.” She has been the associate editor for the Journal of Literacy Research and is currently the associate editor for the Urban Education Journal. \nFeel free to share this invitation with others who may be interested. Thank you.
