SUMMARY:The Best of Enemies - Film Screening for Educators
DESCRIPTION:Join educators from across NC as we come together to view The Best of Enemies – the true story of the unlikely relationship between Ann Atwater\, an outspoken civil rights activist\, and C.P. Ellis\, a local Ku Klux Klan leader. During the racially charged summer of 1971\, Atwater and Ellis come together to co-chair a community summit on the desegregation of schools in Durham\, N.C. The ensuing debate and battle soon lead to surprising revelations that offer lessons for educators for both the past and the present.

SUMMARY:Far East Deep South Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of Far East Deep South\, the award-winning documentary feature film that follows the Chiu family on a surprising journey through Mississippi in search of their lost family history. Along the way\, they meet a diverse group of local residents and historians\, who shed light on the racially complex history of the early Chinese in the segregated South. Their emotional journey also leads them to discover how exclusionary immigration laws like the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 impacted their family and they learn how deep their roots run in America. \n\n\n\nThe event will include light food and refreshments and a Q&A after the screening with speakers Baldwin Chiu (Producer & Subject of film) and Larissa Lam (Director & Producer). \n\n\n\nFor more information on the film\, please visit https://fareastdeepsouth.com/ \n\n\n\nThank you to North Carolina Humanities\, the NC affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities for sponsoring the event!

Participating K-12 teachers will earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs). It is strongly recommended that teams of at least three from each school/organization attend\, but this is not a requirement.

SUMMARY:Black Women Superintendents Leading with Excellence
DESCRIPTION:Join The Education Trust and the School Superintendents Association (AASA) for Black Women Superintendents Leading With Excellence \n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\nDr. Latonya M. Goffney\, Superintendent\, Aldine Independent School District (TX)\n\n\n\nDr. Sonja Brookins Santelises\, CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools (MD)\n\n\n\nDr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt\, Interim Superintendent of Alexandria City Public Schools (VA)\n\n\n\nDr. Kyla Johnson-Trammell\, Superintendent of Oakland Unified School District (CA)\n\n\n\n\nModerator: Arthur Jones II\, ABC News Producer/Reporter \n\n\n\nDescription: \n\n\n\nBlack women make up only 1.4% of people leading school districts nationwide. However\, in today’s environment\, where classrooms have become sites of cultural and political conflict\, Black women leaders are best positioned for the job. Black women know firsthand what it takes to thrive amid racism and sexism — overcoming systemic barriers and challenges that many of their peers do not endure. This lived experience fuels them daily as they work to meet their student’s academic and social-emotional needs and ensure that\, despite the challenges of the pandemic\, all students leave the K-12 school system with precisely what they need to succeed. \n\n\n\nIn this candid conversation\, we’ll explore how to support students’ mental health\, the pressures of leadership\, recent book bans\, and more. These leaders will also discuss what must be done to diversify the school leadership pipeline and\, notably\, how to support Black women school leaders once they take the helm.
