SUMMARY:Expanding Our Views of Marginalized Students’ Identities
DESCRIPTION:Also available via Zoom!\nMesmin Destin\, associate professor in the Department of Psychology and School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University\, will discuss significant advances in psychological science that have provided insight on how to best support the achievement and well-being of students from a diverse range of backgrounds. \n\nDestin is also a fellow of Northwestern’s Institute for Policy Research and the inaugural faculty director of Student Access & Enrichment. He completed his Ph.D. in social psychology at the University of Michigan in 2010. He uses experiments and other methods to investigate factors shaping the experiences and outcomes of students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Destin received the American Psychological Association Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution in 2019 and a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in 2021.\nPlease join us for a reception after the talk.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Joseph Holt Jr.\, the first Black student to challenge Raleigh’s school system following the passing of Brown v. Board of Education\, and Dr. Dudley E. Flood\, a retired educator and state-level administrator who was instrumental in leading the desegregation efforts in North Carolina schools. Holt and Flood will recount their experiences and discuss integration in Wake County during the 1950s. Join us for this Black History Month event.

DESCRIPTION:The Science for All Summit is a community convening to advance inclusion\, diversity\, equity\, and access (IDEA) in the fields of science\, technology\, engineering\, and mathematics (STEM). The purpose of the Summit is to engage educators\, practitioners\, researchers\, thought leaders\, and other change agents in conversation and knowledge building around emerging issues and innovative strategies related to advancing IDEA in STEM. Putting these ideals into practice requires an intentional focus on creating authentic and adaptive environments while simultaneously cultivating a community that collaborates\, innovates\, and implements promising practices shown to effect sustainable change. At the Summit\, we provide opportunities to share new research findings\, exchange resources\, discuss strategies\, and demonstrate effective practices and interventions.
