The Flood Center provides internships to undergraduate students who are interested in addressing issues of equity, access, and opportunity in education. Through Flood Center internships, students interested in the non-profit sector are provided professional, learning, and networking experiences across our program areas. These opportunities allow the Flood Center to prepare the next generation of non-profit professionals, and continue to diversify the profession.
2023 Flood Center Interns
Evelin Ortiz-Munoz
Summer 2023 Intern
I am Evelin Ortiz-Munoz, a first-generation Latinx student from Siler City, North Carolina. In the fall, I will be entering my second year at UNC Chapel Hill where I am majoring in public policy with a minor in journalism. Since high school, I have volunteered with various non-profits in my community. Witnessing the dedication of these non-profits has motivated me to further work toward providing proper information and resources to marginalized groups. I hope to continue building onto my experience in the non-profit sector and look forward to contributing to the Dudley Flood Center’s vision of a high-quality, equitable education for every student in North Carolina.
Evelin’s internship is sponsored by the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation through its Non-Profit Internship Program.
Supreme Court Affirmative Action Ruling
Written by: Evelin Ortiz-Munoz
On June 29th, the Supreme Court ruled against the use of affirmative action in college admissions. The consequences from this decision will reverberate across the nation and threaten to reverse decades of progress in diversifying our college campuses. This is a step back from providing educational opportunity for every student.
Banning race from college admissions does a disservice in ignoring our nation’s history of racial discrimination, pretending that that same inequality does not still plague our institutions. It may look different from what we learn in history textbooks, but segregation still very much exists.
Selena Collins is a summer intern for 2023 at the Dudley Flood Center for Educational Equity and Opportunity. She is a North Carolina native and went through K-12 in the Guilford County Public School System. She’s currently a sophomore BN Duke scholar at Duke University. She plans to major in history, minor in education, and get a certificate in documentary studies. Through her studies, she hopes to create a foundation for a career as an educator and an advocate for education policy. During her time over the summer, she hopes to become more informed and involved in the fight for education equity in North Carolina and support the Dudley Flood Center in whatever capacity she can be helpful.
Selena’s internship is sponsored by the Benjamin N. Duke Scholarship Program

Supreme Court Affirmative Action Ruling
Written by: Selena Collins
On June 23, 2023, the United States Supreme Court gutted Affirmative Action programs in college admissions. This decision marks a regressive step that undermines over 50 years of progress in increasing the representation of women and people of color in higher education institutions. The American Bar Association states that affirmative action was originally implemented to address the systemic inequalities deeply ingrained not only in the college admission process but also within the very fabric of American society.
