About the Organization

Mission

To support and promote environmental education programs, facilities and resources in North Carolina for the purpose of improving the public’s environmental literacy and stewardship of natural resources through planning, community involvement, innovative partnerships and collaboration.

Services

The Department of Environmental Quality's Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs serves as a clearinghouse for all the environmental education resources in the state. The website provides resources on field trips, professional development opportunities, which include training on topics such as diversity and inclusion, and other resources for North Carolina's PreK-12 teachers, nonformal educators, and homeschool educators. We also count these training toward an educator’s Environmental Education Certification. We administer that program which requires 200 hours of professional development in environmental education.

The website includes a searchable database of jobs, grants and events. The Office administers the North Carolina Environmental Education Certification Program, a professional development program in environmental education for educators.
