1896

Plessy v. Fergerson

The Supreme Court’s ruling in Plessy v. Ferguson established the doctrine of ‘separate but equal,’ mandating racial segregation in schools. Despite this mandate, the reality was far from equal, exposing the deep disparities that would fuel the fight for civil rights.

1932

The Birth of Dudley Flood & Early Education 

Reflecting on the journey of Dudley E. Flood, born in Winton, NC, on September 13, 1932. Growing up in a small town, Dudley navigates the challenges of an all-black school system during a time of limited resources.

1954

Higher Education

From classroom lessons to life lessons: Dudley’s journey from HBCU to public service highlights the power of education and self-belief.

Pathway to Becoming a Teacher

 “I always knew I would be a teacher. I didn’t know where, how, or when, but I always knew I would be a teacher.”-Dr. Flood

Brown v Board to Education

On May 17, a landmark decision in Brown v. Board of Education changes the course of history, declaring that ‘separate but equal’ was unconstitutional. This pivotal ruling mandated school integration across the U.S., igniting a movement towards equality and justice in education.

1955

Beginning of His Career 

Starting his impactful journey in education, Dudley E. Flood dedicates 12 years to teaching eighth-grade before moving on to high school and coaching athletics. His commitment to fostering knowledge and passion for learning has left a lasting legacy in the community.

Pupil Assignment Act 

On March 30, 1955, the North Carolina General Assembly passes the Pupil Assignment Act, postponing integration and shifting desegregation responsibility to local school boards while omitting racial references from school laws. A pivotal moment in the ongoing struggle for educational equity.

1956

Love and Family

Dudley E. Flood shares 56 beautiful years of marriage with Barbra Thomas Flood.

1964

Civil Rights Act

The Civil Rights Act empowers the federal government to withhold funding from North Carolina school districts that resisted desegregation after Brown v. Board of Education.

1968

Hyde County

In September 1968, African American families in Hyde County launches the Hyde County Movement, a powerful school boycott against a desegregation plan that excludes Black voices and threatened to close most all-Black schools.

NC Textbook Commission

Dudley E. Flood breaks barriers as the first person of color on the North Carolina Textbook Commission, playing a vital role in evaluating and recommending educational materials to the State Board of Education.

Becoming a Principal 

After teaching, Dudley transitions to becoming a principal at a Pitt County School.

1969

Department of Public Instruction (DPI)

Dr. Dudley E. Flood believes that true integration can only begin in schools. After transitioning to the Department of Public Instruction’s Division of Human Labor, he is called upon by Superintendent Dr. Craig Phillips to lead efforts in desegregating North Carolina schools.

1970

Pursuing Higher Education 

Flood earns his bachelor’s degree, and pursues a master’s in education administration at East Carolina University.

1974

NC Desegregation Compliance 

While all counties in North Carolina complied with desegregation, Dudley E. Flood recognizes that true integration requires ongoing commitment and oversight.

1980

Becoming a Member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

Dudley E. Flood joins Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., embracing its mission of ‘Culture for Service and Service for Humanity.’

Becoming Dr. Flood 

Dudley E. Flood earns his Doctorate in Education from Duke University.

1984

Governors Award of the Order of Long Leaf Pine Award 

Dr. Dudley E. Flood is honored with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award, North Carolina’s highest civic distinction

1990

Tenure at DPI

Throughout his tenure, he plays a crucial role in promoting desegregation, persuading local officials to embrace change, and facilitating school integration as a liaison between the federal government and local school boards.

1996 

Beyond North Carolina 

“I didn’t get into education for a tour of duty. I got into education for the duration. Until all the problems are solved, I am going to be in education. I’m going to be doing something that makes it better for somebody every day that I live, and I promise you that.”– Dr. Flood

2001

UNC Board of Governors

Dr. Dudley E. Flood makes a significant impact during his 12 years on the UNC Board of Governors, serving as secretary from 2011 to 2012. His contributions spanned across three standing committees, reflecting his commitment to advancing education and equity in North Carolina.

2009

2013

Raised by an Angel 

Dr. Dudley E. Flood shares his inspiring journey in his book Raised by an Angel, reflecting on his transformation from rural North Carolina to a renowned educator and sought-after speaker. Embracing the title of ‘edutainer,’ he believes that education shines brightest when it’s entertaining.

2015

Peabody Award

Dr. Dudley E. Flood is honored with the prestigious Peabody Award from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Education during their Alumni Awards. This recognition celebrates his significant contributions to education and his unwavering commitment to improving educational opportunities in North Carolina and beyond.

2017

Raleigh Hall of Fame 

Dudley E. Flood was inducted into the Raleigh Hall of Fame, which honors individuals and non-profit organizations that have made significant and lasting contributions to Raleigh’s history and contemporary community.

2019

Dudley Flood Center for Educational Equity and Opportunity

This hub connects leaders from education, business, government, and academia to address equity, access, and opportunity in education across North Carolina.

2020

Friday Medal Award

Dr. Dudley E. Flood is honored with the Friday Medal Award by the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, recognizing his distinguished contributions to education through advocacy, innovation, and inspiration.

Launching of the Flood Center 

Following its announcement at the 2019 Color of Education Summit, the Dudley Flood Center officially launches.

Present Day

Dr. Flood efforts continue

A champion for educational equity, recognized with over 350 awards for his impactful work. His unwavering commitment continues to pave the way for today’s and tomorrow’s students.
